The outermost part of the Earth's hard surface (lithosphere) is formed by fragments, called plate tectonics. As these plates move over a layer of molten magma, they tend to move parallel to each other (subduction process) or collide. These movements cause many earthquakes and volcanic activity in the boundary areas of the plates. When the tremors are very intense, they disrupt the water balance and lead to the formation of waves up to 160 kilometers wide and 0.5 meters high. These water masses propagate towards the continent at a speed of about 800 km/h. Such phenomenon is called tsunami. The word, by the way, has Japanese origin and means “port wave”.
