In a biogeographic definition, paramo is any intertropical mountain ecosystem, characterized by shrubby vegetation and which generally occurs from altitudes of about 3,000 and 4,000 meters or up to 5,000 meters, ie in regions above the continuous forest line but still below the snow line permanent. It is found in East Africa, New Guinea and Central and South America. However, since, in each of these regions, this ecosystem has a specific name, when discussing the Paramos, we refer specifically to the Andean Paramos.
