The river's name is a tribute to São Francisco de Assis, because it was discovered on the day chosen to celebrate the saint. During the period of the first expeditions, the Xacriabá Indians occupied the meeting of the waters.
Even today these indigenous populations live near the river and have a very special affection for these waters. It is a relationship of survival because they take water from it to irrigate family agriculture and fish. But it is also a cultural relationship, because Velho Chico is part of the rite of life of these people.
