Samba emerged in Bahia, in the 19th century, from the mixture of African rhythms. But it was in Rio de Janeiro that he settled. At the beginning of his story, he was not __________ as a national symbol, as he is today. On the contrary – samba was something for idle people.
A key figure at that time was Hilária Batista de Almeida, known as Tia Ciata. Born in Bahia, in 1854, she moved to Rio de Janeiro at the age of 22, being responsible for taking samba de roda there. Aunt Ciata was also a great supporter of the movement, opening the doors of her house to meetings of pioneer samba dancers when the practice was still prohibited by law.
It was from the beginning of the 40s, with the Vargas government, that samba began to be seen as one of the most important cultural manifestations in Brazil.
