Curiosity of the day

The English archaeologist William John Thoms (1803 – 1885), creator of the term “folklore”, sent a letter to the magazine The Atheneum, of London, in 1846, under the pseudonym Ambrose Merton. In the letter, he asked for support in gathering information about the country's traditions and legends. The document was published on August 22nd and, therefore, the date was chosen as World Folklore Day. The word “folklore” comes from English

folklore: folk (people), lore (empirical knowledge, wisdom) – that is, the term designates the wisdom of a people.
