The equals symbol = that we use to reveal a result was created 460 years ago by a 16th-century Welshman. At 14, he was already studying at Oxford University and, at 21, he was teaching mathematics while studying medicine. His name was Robert Recorde.
Robert has written several books on astronomy, geometry and arithmetic. He wrote for the mainstream audience and his latest book,
the sharpening stone, published in 1557, the year before his death, he gave the world the symbol of equals. He got annoyed when he had to spell out that one side of the equation was the same as the other. He decided to use a symbol: a pair of parallels.
The reason? "There are no other things in the world that can be more equal."
