Elaine Luiza dos Santos is the first quadriplegic student to graduate in medicine in the country. Born in the state of Paraná, the student started her course around 2012, at the State University of Western Paraná (Unioeste). However, during this period, the young woman ended up suffering a very serious stroke.
So from that moment on, Elaine faced countless difficulties, both physical and emotional. Afterwards, she moved to the neighboring city, Cascavel, in order to facilitate her medical treatments. Doubts surrounded her, in addition to insecurity and uncertainty, but she had a great desire to complete her much desired course. “I didn't want to give up the dream of becoming a doctor. It was a childhood dream that I nurtured into adulthood,” she says.

In a dilemma about dropping out of college or fighting for her dream, she finally decided. He would remain until the end, with his motivation to help people's well-being. “My motivation to continue was the desire to be able to take care of people. Motivation is something intrinsic to the dream. Quite simply, the charm I have for science is that it makes the effort worthwhile,” she says.
However, its journey to get here has involved the participation of a vast team. With the support provided by the college, the young woman became part of the Special Education Program (PEE), which provided a specialized pedagogue. “It was a long relationship with PEE professionals. The study routine would have been more difficult without them”, commented Elaine.
In addition, there were several adaptations by the institution, from a specialized room to evaluation processes, in accordance with the legislation for students with special conditions.
Now graduated, she recognizes that there will be several obstacles in the job market as well, but she is aware that none of her efforts were in vain and that all the path traveled so far was worth the effort. pity. “I think I am very successful. I feel that this achievement can encourage other people to seek their personal achievements. Despite the fact that life has many difficult moments, this does not mean that we will never be happy again”, emphasizes the now doctor.
