Read the following text about a federal government project for the São Francisco River.

The diversion of the São Francisco river

Despite numerous irrigation projects and the drilling of artesian wells, the Northeast still suffers greatly from droughts caused by the lack of rain. However, there is a project under discussion for a long time, which intends to reduce the problem of drought in the Northeast. This project is known as the transposition of the waters of the São Francisco River.

The São Francisco river transposition project proposes to divert, through ducts and pipes, the waters of the Velho Chico, as it is also known in the region, from its normal course, making in this way the irrigation and supply of other rivers. This transposition would supply the states of Pernambuco, Bahia, Paraíba, Piauí, Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte.
But the project is controversial, as it is not clear what the environmental impact of these works will be on the São Francisco River.
