Text for at questions from 05 to 10
Created over 50 years ago, Turma da Mônica will finally become real people. After printing daily comic strips in newspapers and comic book pages published in 29 countries, starring in cartoons, theatrical shows, games and even mobile apps, the characters that cartoonist Mauricio de Sousa created from his daughter and her little friends will be played by children of flesh and bone. In 2018, Mônica, Cebolinha, Cascão and Magali will return to the movies in the film “Laços”. (…) At 81 years old, Mauricio de Sousa highlights in the following interview the global success of his creations, he speaks of a initiative to help Brazilian children of decasseguis to get better acquainted with Japan and regrets the creation of barriers between countries.
Revista – Why put real children in the roles of Turma da Mônica for the first time in a movie?
Mauricio de Sousa - We are daring. I was convinced that we now have the capacity and good conditions to face this challenge. We can train the puppies and take good care of the kids who will work on the film. We want a joyful film that inspires and makes a mark.
Magazine - How will the choice of actors be?
Mauricio de Sousa - Of course, we are going to look for children with the physical characteristics most similar to the characters, but we're looking for talent. (…)
Revista – Is Turma da Mônica immune to the crisis?
Mauricio de Sousa - We have 10 million permanent readers in Brazil. This has held up steadily over the years. Crisis comes in, crisis comes out, we keep selling millions. (…)
Magazine - Before YouTube, his comic books circulated in nearly thirty countries. What adaptations needed to be made to suit different cultures?
Mauricio de Sousa - Little thing. For example, in Indonesia, when Monica and Magali went to the beach, they had to wear a one-piece swimsuit and not a bikini. There are countries where the Bidu (dog) cannot pee on the pole, otherwise the publisher is fined. In Greece, boys can't possibly whistle to a girl on the street. We learn what is fun and do what is allowed.
Revista – And in Brazil, how have the characters' characteristics adapted to the new times?
Mauricio de Sousa - In the beginning, Monica was a little more violent, giving the gang more painful footprints. A child from Brasília wrote to us saying that if she continued beating Cebolinha like that, he would no longer buy the magazine. That touched the whole studio. We follow what happens.
Revista – In addition to comics, are there other segments the brand is the market leader?
Mauricio de Sousa - Yes. The apple is one of them. Undisputed leader. I'm not the serpent of paradise, but I'm the one who invented this apple (laughs). I had little kids and when they ate an apple, they left half of it. Or, when they wanted to take it to school, it didn't fit in the lunch box. Until I visited a plantation in Santa Catarina and saw some small apples, which were not sold in the market. They were used to make paste and give to animals. Because that was exactly the apple, small, that I wanted to give to my children. It fit in the lunch box. I suggested launching it as the Monica's Gang apple and it was that killer. Today we have pears, kiwis, carrots, Horácio's lettuce…(…)
Revista – We are living in a moment of intolerance in Brazil too. from what
how its performance can awaken greater acceptance in new generations.
from the other?
Mauricio de Sousa - Doing work that shows the opposite: that tolerance, solidarity, respect are seen in a positive way and that they bring happiness.(…)
