Read the text below:
In Rosário, on the banks of the Cuiabá river, an ambitious and cruel miner had lived for many years, whose slaves were obliged to deliver him, every day, a certain amount of gold.
One of these old slaves, called Pai Antônio, took a whole week without finding a grain of gold. He was sad and downcast, thinking about the punishment he was going to suffer, when he saw in front of him a beautiful woman with blond hair.
She asked him the reason for his sadness, and the slave told him the punishment that awaited him for not having found gold. Then the beautiful woman said to him:
_ Will buy, for me, a blue, red and yellow ribbon, a comb and a mirror, because I'm going to help him.
The old slave quickly arranged the requested objects and handed them to the girl. She then showed him a place where there was a lot of gold. The slave picked up his drum and managed to collect a large quantity of the precious metal. She immediately took her to her master, thus freeing herself from the punishment that awaited her. The blonde girl forbade him, however, to reveal the place where the gold mine was.
Naturally, the slave's master wanted to know where the slave had found such a quantity of gold. But Pai Antônio refused to say the place and, therefore, was cruelly whipped. Every day, he received the same punishment. No longer able to bear so much suffering, he begged the girl to let him tell his master the secret.
The girl, who was the Mother of the Gold, protector of the mines, answered Pai Antônio's request. And he sent word to the slave owner to take twenty-two slaves and dig the mine to the bottom. The men carried out the girl's orders and found a rich gold deposit in the shape of a tree. They dug, dug, but they couldn't get to the bottom of the mine.
The next day, the girl told the old man to make an excuse after lunch and get away from the mine. The slave did so. The miner and the other slaves continued digging to see if they could remove the golden trunk with its roots from the earth.
For this, they opened a huge hole. Suddenly, everything collapsed and the men rolled to the bottom of the mine, being crushed by the avalanche of earth that fell on them. Thus died the ambitious and cruel miner. And Father Antônio, thanks to the protection of the Mother of the Gold, was saved and lived for over a hundred years, peaceful and happy.
