There is immense biodiversity – animals and plants – in and around the São Francisco River. In the rapids, 44% of the animal species found are exclusive to the Velho Chico, that is, they do not exist in other watercourses.
But there are also 42% of species that migrate from other hydrographic basins and the so-called exotic species, which invade the river when it meets the sea. Some of these animals are endangered.
