Known for having a white strip of hair that goes from the upper half of the chest to the neck, the tamarin (two-colored saguinus) is endemic to the Brazilian Amazon, living mainly in Manaus, Rio Preto da Eva and Itacoatiara, in the state of Amazonas. As it is not suitable for the urban environment of the Amazonian capital, this species is at serious risk of extinction. Threats range from being run over to attacks by pets and even accidents with power cables. Another point of attention is the capture of the primate for illegal trade.
In other cities, in areas farther away from human coexistence, the primate suffers from deforestation and competition with the yellow-tailed marmoset (Saguinus midas). This set of factors has already caused an estimated loss of 80% in the tamarin population. The IUCN Red List classifies the animal's status as “Critically Endangered”. Likewise, ICMBio included the primate in the Red Book of Brazilian Fauna Threatened with Extinction.
There is also a third reason that can contribute to the decline of the species: the proliferation of diseases among the population. According to the study, there are projects that investigate the relationship of the primate's extinction threat with Zika, dengue and chikungunya.
In an attempt to reverse this situation, ICMBio created the National Action Plan (PAN) for the Conservation of Sauim-de-Coleira. The initiative invests in the promotion of care for the animal's habitat and in environmental education in the metropolitan region of Manaus.
