The cerrado is present in 11 Brazilian states and the Federal District. Not to mention the enclaves in Amapá, Roraima and Amazonas. The second largest Brazilian biome, which occupies a total area of 2,036,448 km², is known as the savanna with the greatest diversity on the planet.
It is also the most threatened in national territory. It is estimated that more than 50% of its original coverage has been deforested in recent years.
According to the Ministry of the Environment, countless species of plants and animals in the cerrado are at risk of extinction. It is estimated that 20% of native and endemic species no longer occur in protected areas and that at least 137 species of animals in the cerrado are threatened with extinction. In the last three decades, the cerrado has been degraded by the expansion of the Brazilian agricultural frontier.
