A boy, a shepherd, had been given a whistle to blow in case of danger. As he spent much of the day in the fields with his flock of sheep, a means of communication was needed in an emergency.
On a calm sunny day, while the sheep grazed peacefully, the boy decided to blow the whistle just to see what would happen.
Hearing the alarm, the entire village rushed to save him from impending danger. But there was no danger. Everything was in complete peace. All that could be heard was the laughter of the little shepherd, who thought the whole thing was very funny.
After a few days, the boy blew the whistle again. And again, the whole village came to his rescue. But they only found the shepherd boy laughing out loud at the scare he had preached.
It happened, however, that a huge hungry wolf appeared by that pasture. And before attacking the herd, he decided to chase the boy. This one, more than fast, blew the whistle. As no one came to her rescue, she blew once more. And another one more. In vain. Despite hearing the desperate whistle, everyone thought it was another little shepherd's joke.
Running for his life, the boy still had time to realize that, in the mouth of a liar, even the purest truth seems a lie.
The truth is always the best way.
