No tail, but safe!

Despite its name, the lizard-do-vine does not live hanging around. Its name comes from the place where it was first cataloged, Serra do Cipó, in Minas Gerais. Its habitat is not the forests, but the rupestrian fields, environments with low vegetation, which rise on rocks at the top of some mountains.

Small and very agile, the lizard-do-vine is not easy to spot. Since the species was discovered in 1966, less than a dozen of them have been found by researchers. Apparently, it is a rare animal, with few individuals existing in nature.

Due to its rarity, almost nothing is known about this species. But something very special the researchers have already discovered: to escape from a predator, the lizard-do-vine is able to let go of its own tail and, after a few weeks, another brand new tail starts to sprout!

To protect the lizard-do-vine and other species in the region, the National Action Plan for the Conservation of Endangered Reptiles and Amphibians in the Serra do Espinhaço was created. The idea is to bring together researchers, government agencies, companies and the community to conserve nature and species that are at risk of disappearing.
