The tortoise spent time whining about being slow and clumsy. As she liked to make comparisons, she loved the beauty and lightness with which the birds moved. She couldn't accept her luck and got to be very sad.
— How boring to have to drag myself on the ground, step by step and with effort! Ah! If I could fly, even just once! she said over and over, day after day.
Finally, one autumn day, she managed to convince the eagle to take her on a high-altitude walk. Gently and with great majesty, the eagle and the tortoise soared into the sky that afternoon. The little animal was overflowing with happiness, seeing down there, so far away, the land and its inhabitants.
"Oh, how wonderful!" How happy I am! How envious the other turtles must feel, watching me fly so high! I really am a unique turtle! she exclaimed, her voice trembling with emotion.
But the eagle got so tired of hearing her vain arguments that she decided to let her go. The proud turtle fell like a stone, thousands of meters high, shattering into shards as it hit the ground.
Some turtles, who saw their neighbor fall, exclaimed pityingly:
— Poor thing! She was so safe down here on earth, and she had to look for heights to get lost.
A hard lesson for those who strive to go against their own nature. Isn't it better for everyone to conform to what they are?
