Biden announces wealth tax

On March 28, 2022, US President Joe Biden announced a new tax plan aimed at billionaires for the 2023 budget. You must be wondering, how so? That's right, dear reader, the leader of the United States, as a way of guaranteeing “more fair” in his perspective, decided to adhere to the taxation of large fortunes for those 0.0001% richest in the country.

This project announced by Biden is called the “Billionaire Minimum Income Tax”. This proposal determines, basically, that the richest Americans will have to pay at least 20% of income tax. This proposal, it is important to point out, will be applied to families that have assets of more than US$100 million (R$473.61 million) or more.

According to tax justice, the wealth accumulated during the pandemic by billionaires is 1.7 trillion dollars. Only the billionaire Elon Musk, in the first three months of 2022, managed to add around 4.5 billion dollars to his assets, accumulating a fortune of approximately 1.28 trillion dollars.

Yet, according to a White House survey, the 40 richest families in the United States paid, on average, only 8.2% of annual income taxes. This happened, in large part, because the Income Tax considered the paycheck that workers they took home as a means of monitoring taxation, which, of course, with billionaires doesn't make the slightest difference. sense.

The American proposal is based on the premise that many billionaires dribble income with “unrealized capital gain”, since this payment model is exempt from Income Tax. With the proposed minimum tax, taxation will now occur on assets and not on paychecks.

With this new taxation model, Elon Musk (CEO of Tesla), would have to pay a tax of around US$ 50 billion or R$ 236.58 billion. Jeff Bezos (CEO of Amazon), would pay around US$ 35 billion or R$ 165.61 billion, while Mark Zuckerberg (CEO of Meta/Facebook), around US$ 16 billion or R$ 75.71 billion .
