Why do children feel peer pressure?

In adolescence, friends play an exemplary role. Children stop looking at their parents and start looking more at their friends to choose how to dress, talk and behave.

But at first, it's important to understand why kids feel peer pressure. This answer can be simple, and the most common one is that each of us wants to fit in and be accepted by our friends. This is especially true for children.

Standing up against what a group of schoolmates, for example, believes to be correct is the same as asking to be ignored and left aside. Because of this, we can say with certainty that the people we live with positively or negatively affect our lives.

How does this pressure occur?

Peer influence is even greater during adolescence than at other stages, and is characterized by being quite important. This happens because young people want to identify with other people their age to, for example:

  • Be inspired and be equal to those you admire;
  • Try different and new things;
  • Feeling part of a group of people;
  • Fit in and not feel weird or different from most;
  • Avoid prejudice or some kind of bullying for being or thinking “different”.

Making decisions is difficult in itself, and it becomes even more complicated when opposing points of view are presented. Exactly the same thing happens to young people. That is, peer pressure pushes them in a certain direction, even if they think the right thing is different.

The negative influence that this pressure can cause

However, this pressure that exists from friends and colleagues at this stage of life can be very harmful. For example, if someone feels low on confidence, it is likely to be a sign of negative influence from these peers.

This is a very difficult phase to deal with, not least because these forms of pressure like the ones described above can cause great trauma and lead to different disorders in the future. That way, be careful and watch if anyone around you is going through this. Avoiding this pressure and taking care of mental health is necessary!
