Abraham was one of the sons of Terah, 20 generations after Adam and 10 after Noah. He was the first of the biblical patriarchs, born in Ur, the ancient city-state of Sumeria.
In the Bible, the story is told that Abraham received a revelation from God for him to lead the Semitic peoples and migrate to the chosen land.
The promised land is Canaan, the land of Hebrews, currently located in the State of Israel, known as Palestine.
After receiving God's call, Abraham left Ur and went with his wife, Sarah, his nephew, son of Haran, and some relatives in search of the promised land.
Along the way, after a few years of migration, some of his family settled in a land that would be called Haran.
Abraham proceeded to Canaan with his wife and nephew. Upon arriving in the promised land, they remained there until the region was hit by an extreme period of famine.
So Abraham went to the Egypt, where he stayed until he built his fortune. Times later, he returned to Canaan and renewed his promises and separated from his nephew Lot.
Lot leaves for other lands, settling in a region near Sodom and Gomorrah. However, Lot is imprisoned by the Mesopotamian kings and Abraham leaves to help him.
By rescuing Lot and defeating the rulers, Abraham occupies this region, south of Canaan.
His wife Sarah turns out to be barren and offers Abraham her Egyptian handmaid, Hagar, with whom he has his first son, Ishmael. However, many years later, Sarah manages to get pregnant by Abraham and their second son, Isaac, is born.
According to the Bible, God tests the patriarch's faith and asks him to sacrifice his eldest son. About to complete the task, an angel holds Abraham's hand and prevents him from killing his son, freeing him from the promise and proving himself faithful.
Sara dies at the age of 127, being buried in the Cave of Machpelah, southwest of the West Bank, in the heart of ancient Judea.
After the death of his wife, Abraham marries Keturah, giving rise to 6 other children.
Abraham dies at the age of 165 and is also buried in Machpelah, next to Sarah.
After the father's death, the children leave again for Egypt, after another period of famine hit Canaan. In Egypt, they are turned into slaves for a period of 400 years.
Only with Moses, chosen by God to free the Hebrews, they are freed and guided for another 40 years until the arrival and reconquest of the promised land.
Ishmael, the firstborn son of Abraham, gave rise to his descendants, forming the Ishmaelites, people from which the Arabs descended.
Isaac, son of Abraham and Sarah, fathered two sons, Esau and Jacob. The two did not have a good relationship, which caused Jacob to flee not to be killed.
Jacob had 12 sons, each of whom originated a tribe and later created the nation of the Hebrew people. Therefore, it is said that the descendants of Abraham gave rise to the Arab peoples.
