Drone designed by Da Vinci that came out of paper 500 years later

No one doubts that Leonardo da Vinci was a memorable man, a true timeless genius. After all, in addition to being one of the most recognized artists of all time and the author of the famous work Monalisa, he was also a scholar in many areas. So there is a leonardo da vinci drone and few people know.

It turns out that Da Vinci was interested in the study of languages, human anatomy, the laws of physics, astronomy and even engineering. I mean, a man like that is rarely seen around every day.

In fact, one of the artist's most interesting works or idealizations is a drone inspired by the Archimedes screw. However, of course we know that labeling it as a “drone” is something recent, not least because the project looked more like a helicopter. But the fact is that this project was finally developed by students at the University of Maryland, who managed to make the device work.

Maryland students recreate Leonardo da Vinci's drone

In this case, the elaboration of the project was part of a master's research by some students at the University of Maryland. So the students revised the design and, although the materials used were modern, they followed the artist's original plan.

In this way, the structure similar to that designed by Da Vinci was maintained, but the students used batteries and electric motors. However, it was still possible to see that Leonardo managed to understand physics well, and that's why the project worked.

drone details

The project dates from the 1480s and has four wings with a somewhat peculiar shape: in the shape of a corkscrew! However, for the retelling, plastic was used to build the wings, while Da Vinci planned to have the wings rotate manually.

With that, similarly to helicopter propellers, the drone was able to achieve flight. In fact, the project went through a simplification process, as it was found that, if kept identical to the original, the drone would fly, but it would be more expensive.
