Argentine cartoonist Joaquin Salvador Lavado, Quino, was the creator of the character Mafalda, a questioning little girl who loved the Beatles and hated soup, wars and social inequality.
Born on July 17, 1932, in Mendoza, Argentina, Quino was the son of Spanish immigrants. Since he was a child, he always liked to draw.
Quino's career started in 1950, drawing for advertising and collaborating with some humor pages. He published his first cartoon at the age of 22 and his first book, “Mundo Quino”, at 31.
His most famous character, Mafalda, was conceived in 1963, in strips that illustrated an advertising campaign that never aired, but that the magazine “Primera Plana” agreed to publish. It was a great success!
The six-year-old girl philosophized about life, questioned the political situation in her country, criticized wars and opposed injustices. And, of course, like every child his age, he played a lot with his little friends (many of them, inspired by Quino's own childhood friends).
Due to the critical content of his strips, Quino never considered Mafalda a childish character. But the little Argentine has conquered and still conquers readers of all ages! Their stories have been translated into more than 35 languages, being compared to the Snoopy Gang and the Monica Gang comic strips in popularity.
For the whole of his work – and, of course, for the strips of his most famous character – Quino received many important awards, such as the Príncipe de Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities and the Order and Letters Medal from France.
Quino died on September 30, 2020, at the age of 88, leaving him with memorable characters and a lot of nostalgia!
