When brothers Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, from Green Gables, Prince Edward Island, Canada, decide to adopt an orphan to help them with their work. farm, are not prepared for the “mistake” that will change their lives: Anne Shirley, an 11-year-old red-haired girl, ends up being sent, by mistake, by the orphanage.
Despite the unexpected event, the girl's outgoing nature, always at ease with life, her curiosity, her peculiar imagination and her chatter quickly conquer the reluctant adoptive parents. Anne's combative and inquisitive spirit soon attracts the interest of locals – and many problems too.
However, Anne was something of a Pollyanna, and her ability to always see the beautiful and positive side of everything, her love for life, for nature, for books conquers everyone, and she ends up being “adopted” also by the community.
First published in 1908, this delightful story, which illustrates fundamental values such as ethics, solidarity, honesty and the importance of work and friendship, has had numerous editions, having sold over 50 million copies throughout the world. It has been translated into over 20 languages and adapted for theater and film.
