Visiting the Amazon rainforest for business or pleasure is an opportunity to be enchanted by the diversity of plants and animals in this rich biome. It's also a chance to get your eyes used to seeing the miniature beauties of a place where everything, at first glance, appears gigantic. Imagine that in this forest, among the trees that seem to touch the sky, is the
Coleodactylus amazonicus, a 40mm long gecko, with half that size of tail!In fact, it lives on the forest floor, among the fallen leaves. Like all reptiles, its body is covered with scales. The big difference is that it's minimal, fitting your fingertip.
But there are other details that make the Coleodactylus amazonicus curious: their nails, for example, are covered with four scales, forming what scientists call a case and facilitating their walk in the forest. Another interesting thing about this gecko is that it extends its tongue and runs it over its eyes to clean or moisten them. It does this because, in place of the eyelids, it has a kind of clear lens, which permanently protects your eyes. That way, your eyes can always be open, which is very useful for such a small animal, which can be an attractive meal for other larger animals, such as spiders.
Being very small, this gecko lays only one egg at a time. On the other hand, it reproduces several times a year. It's easy to recognize a pregnant female just by looking at her belly, because she can see the egg through her skin, which is very thin, almost transparent. When it is fully developed, the egg is placed on the forest floor, between the leaves, and the baby is born there.
Preserving the Amazon means taking care of the life of many species, including the Coleodactylus amazonicus!
