Activity of text interpretation, aimed at students in the fifth year of elementary school, about the Pampa. He presents low and predominantly flat land, with rounded hills known as “coxilhas”. Are we going to get to know this biome better, which, in Brazil, is present in Rio Grande do Sul? To do this, read the text carefully! Then answer the proposed interpretive questions!

When we talk about Pampa, we immediately imagine an open and green field and a gaucho of Bombachas, drinking mate. No wonder – in Brazil, this biome is exclusive to Rio Grande do Sul, and occupies 63% of the state's territory.
The Pampa has low and predominantly flat land, with rounded hills known as “coxilhas”. There, native fields predominate, permeated by thickets of forest, riparian forests and wetlands. Its climate is temperate. That means mild temperatures most of the year, hot summers – a heat of up to 35ºC! – and icy winters, with frosts and freezing temperatures.
Did you think that the Pampa only had grass? Well, you found it wrong! It is estimated that there are about 3,000 plant species. Grasses predominate, with more than 450 species, but there are legumes, shrubs, trees and palm trees. In the marshes, there are many aquatic species. And on the rocky outcrops, you can even find cacti!
The Pampian fauna is expressive, with almost 500 species of birds, such as the rhea, the perdigão, the partridge and the endangered caboclinho-de-barriga-verde and woodpecker. There are also more than 100 species of land mammals, such as the endangered pampas deer and marsh deer.
The Pampa is also home to most of the Guarani aquifer, one of the largest underground freshwater reservoirs in the world.
For centuries, the Pampa and the gaucho lived in harmony. However, recent forms of land use have contributed to a rapid disappearance of native vegetation, which has already been reduced to approximately one third of its original size.
The progressive introduction and expansion of monocultures and pastures for livestock with exotic species has led to a rapid degradation and de-characterization of the biome's natural landscapes. Mining and hunting also threaten the local nature.
The Day of the Pampa Biome is celebrated on December 17, the birthday of the agronomist and environmentalist from Rio Grande do Sul, José Antonio Lutzenberger, who died in 2002.
