Nicholas Santos wins 50 butterfly and gets close to world record

Swimmer's victory came with 21sec78, three hundredths of the best mark

This Tuesday (10), Nicholas Santos continued to achieve excellent results in the International Swimming League (ISL) in Budapest, Hungary. At the age of 40, the Brazilian, competing for the Iron team, on the second day of the ninth stage of the tournament, won the 50m butterfly, setting the mark of 21sec78.

This was the second best time in the history of the competition in a short pool (25 meters). The world record (21sec75) belongs to Nicholas himself, the 2018 mark. He is also the ISL record holder, surpassing the 21sec86 of the Hungarian Szebasztian Szabo.

The athlete was ahead of Japanese Takeshi Kawamoto, who completed the race in 22sec37, and South African Chad Le Clos, in 22seg92. It is important to point out that the 50 meter butterfly event is not Olympic. The options for the experienced swimmer to be in the Tokyo Olympics (which would be his third participation in the Games) are the 100 meter butterfly and 50 meter freestyle events.

The ISL is played in a short pool (25 meters), a distance different from the one used in the Olympic Games, which is 50 meters. This season, the League, which is being played for the second year in a row, is the sport's biggest event in 2020. There are approximately 400 athletes divided into 10 teams from various countries. These teams face off in ten qualifying stages until the end of November. The decisive tests are scheduled for the 21st and 22nd.
