When we have a fever, we often don't feel like playing, we feel very cold and we get chills and shivers. And that's usually pretty boring, isn't it? A fever is a sign that something is going on in our body and action needs to be taken.
Our body has a constant temperature between 36 and 37°C, which is controlled by an area of the brain called the hypothalamus. That's right – HI-PO-TÁ-LA-MO.
In some situations, such as the flu, infections such as a throat infection or when we spend too much time in the sun, some cells in our body, called leukocytes, release substances that signal the hypothalamus. When these substances reach the hypothalamus through the blood, the body temperature rises and that's when we have a fever!
The rise in temperature then acts as a signal – it tells us that something is wrong with our bodies and that action needs to be taken. Often the fever goes away by itself, just take some precautions such as drinking plenty of water and a bath. But if it continues for a few days, is accompanied by other symptoms, or the fever is very high, you should seek help from an adult and health care provider.
