Literature of twine. You know?

It is one of the most important cultural events in our country. Besides being creative, the string is very cheap and easy to be printed and distributed.

Cordels as we know them today emerged in Portugal, with medieval troubadours, those poets who sang poems in the 12th and 13th centuries. As much of the population was illiterate, this was a good way to spread stories.

In the historical period known as the Renaissance, when paper printing processes were invented, spoken strings also began to circulate in the form of text.

In Brazil, cordel literature became popular in the 18th century and told stories based on regional folklore, in a simple and fun way. The name cordel comes from the way these leaflets were displayed: on rope or string.

Cordel is famous throughout the country, especially in the Northeast. Many Brazilian repentistas (or guitar players) still remember the medieval troubadours when telling stories to music and rhyming in the streets.

Poems are usually illustrated with woodcuts, which appear mainly on the covers. In 1988, the Academia Brasileira de Literatura de Cordel was founded in Rio de Janeiro.

30 years later, in 2018, the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute, IPHAN, recognized the literature of cordel as intangible cultural heritage of Brazil, that is, a very important cultural production that needs to be preserved.
