Nowadays, more and more people are connected to the internet. Whether with your smartphone, computer or tablet, the fact is that thousands of people around the world use the web every day. The functions are diverse, but the main one is to make use of search engines, such as access to Google.
However, when accessing the Google address last weekend, users of the site in South Africa had a surprise: it was down! The reason? The tech giant forgot to renew its domain name (google.co.za), which expired on June 25, 2022.
Upon expiry, the site is pending deletion, which happened on the morning of July 1st. According to those responsible for the company's communication at the site, Google was already aware of the situation and said it was taking the necessary measures to get the site back up and running.
While the problem was not resolved, Google recommended that Internet users use the google.com domain, which remained active and in operation. This is because websites ending in a country, such as co.za, are regional domains associated with that country, as is the case with Google in South Africa. .com does not have a specific country attached to it.
In 2015, a former employee of the company recounted on LinkedIn how he ended up buying Google.com. The reason was that the company would have let one of its domain names expire. The employee then returned the domain name to Google and reported the incident.
