The Pantanal is the largest floodplain in the world. In Brazil, it covers the states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul. Part of its territory – around 38% – is in Paraguay and Bolivia. In these countries it is called Chaco. Its approximate area is 150,355 km² (IBGE, 2004), occupying 1.76% of the total area of the national territory.
In the Pantanal, there are two well-defined seasons: the dry and the rainy. Between the months of November and March, constant rains cause the region's rivers to overflow and flood the lower areas of the landscape, forming large lakes.
As the floods are not so fast, there is time for the local fauna to move to the more high – with the exception of the numerous alligators, which stay where they are, as they really like it when the rivers are full.
The biome is very rich in animal life. 263 species of fish, 41 of amphibians and 113 of reptiles have already been catalogued. Among the birds – 463 species – the macaws, herons, maguari and tuiuiús stand out. Among the 132 species of mammals, jaguars, capybaras and giant otters draw attention.
Almost two thousand plant species have already been identified in the Pantanal landscapes. In the region that is flooded throughout the year, grasses grow. In that subject to the floods of rivers, there is undergrowth, with shrubs and palm trees, such as buriti and caranda. On the other hand, in places that do not suffer from flooding, typical Cerrado species live and, in more humid areas, trees common to the tropical forest.
