DEVELOPMENT:
Show students the topic of the lesson and explain that you will be studying how traits are passed on to offspring.
Design a family tree that has pictures for all students to see. Explain how this tree is made and ask them what are the similarities between the closest people.
If you prefer, you can create a family tree with other animals, such as dogs.
Discuss with students why these similarities happen and recall the concepts of DNA, genes and chromosomes.
Show students a picture about certain traits that we can inherit from our ancestors, such as the earlobe, tongue curling, hairline, and freckles.
Ask them to observe these characteristics in themselves and write them down in their notebook.
Ask the students to exchange the characteristics with the partner next to them. This activity allows them to understand that, even though we are of the same species, we are different because we inherit characteristics from our ancestors.
