Lesson plan - Dividing into equal parts - 2nd year of Elementary School

In the 2nd year of elementary school, children already have some knowledge about what half of something is, half of a fruit, half of a chocolate bar, etc.

They know that to get half of something we must share it in the middle, that is, in two equal parts. However, they still do not associate half as being the result of a division by 2.

The Institute of Mathematics is open for registration for the Olympics…

With that in mind, we prepared a division lesson plan to teach students the concept of half a number being the result of division by two.

Lesson plan – Dividing into equal parts

THEME: What is half of a number

BNCC SKILLS:

(EF02MA08) Solve and elaborate problems involving double, half, triple and third part,
with the support of images or manipulable material, using personal strategies.

SUGGESTED TIME: 2 hours and 15 minutes

GOALS:

Understand that half of a number is the result of dividing the number into two equal parts.

MATERIAL REQUIRED:

  • popsicle sticks;
  • Blackboard and chalk.

DEVELOPMENT:

To teach this lesson on division, it is important that students already know about division. multiplication.

1st activity

Introduce the popsicle sticks and say you are going to share the sticks between two students, giving half to each of them.

Divide the toothpicks into two different amounts that are a very noticeable difference, such as 2 and 8. Give it to the two students and watch how they and the others will react.

At this point, ask questions that show what they understand about half.

Ask if they agree that they each got half of the matchsticks, and then ask how you should have split the matchsticks so that each gets half.

Then, collect the toothpicks and divide them again into two parts, but this time, into two equal parts. Ask them to compare and identify differences between this breakdown and the previous one.

Then write some questions on the board and ask them to write them down and answer them in their notebooks.

  1. What do you mean by half? Cite examples from your everyday life.
  2. How would you explain to someone what half of something is?
  3. Do you know what half a number is?

Discuss these questions with the class, asking them to share their answers with everyone.

2nd activity

Bring them back to the idea that half is when we divide it into two parts of the same size or the same amount.

Then tell them to form two groups and each group should have half the students. Help them to do this.

Write on the board: Group 1 and Group 2 and distribute the students in the groups, one by one, writing their names below.

Group 1 Group 2
Ana Lucas
Enzo Vanessa
junior Eduardo

Then ask them to answer:

  1. How many students are there in Group 1?
  2. How many students are there in Group 2?
  3. Do the groups have the same number of students?
  4. How many students are in the classroom altogether?
  5. Can we divide the number of students in the room into two groups of the same number?

Then explain that half a number is the result of dividing by 2, and give some examples on the board, such as:

How much is half of 6?

half a number

6: 2 = 3

So half of 6 is equal to 3.

3rd activity

Propose problems involving the concept of half a number.

  1. What is half of: a) 12 b) 26 c) 40 d) 50 e) 100
  2. Helena has 20 reais and wants to give half of the amount to each of her children, Isabela and Bento. How much should she give to each of them?
  3. Larissa's uncle is 30 years old and she is half that age. How old is Larissa?
  4. In a lecture, half the people are men. If there are 50 people in the lecture, how many are women?
  5. A puzzle costs 60 reais and Vitor already has half of that amount. How long before Vitor can buy the game?

ASSESSMENT:

Observe students' performance during classes and propose activities and new problems involving the concept of half a number.
