Banknote collectors often assign a different value to money than what is printed. For example, a coin traded in Imperial Brazil could cost much more than it was worth at the time, due to characteristics that make money more valuable than stamped money.
In recent years, a very rare R$100 note, from the 1990s, has risen sharply because it has characteristics that collectors seek, such as antiquity, scarcity, manufacturing errors and even low number of impressions, which makes the banknote less circulable.
The main features of the banknote, which can cost up to R$4,500 on the collectors' market, are as follows:
The appreciation of the R$100 banknote printed with these characteristics occurs because only three series were issued with the signature of Rubens Ricupero and Pedro Malan: 1199, 1200 and 1201. In addition to this fact, the absence of the phrase “God be praised” made the banknote rarer and, therefore, more valuable.
Pedro Malan was president of the Central Bank from September 1993 to January 1995, while Rubens Ricupero was minister of the then Ministry of Finance – nowadays Ministry of Economy -, for only 5 months, and they were responsible for signing the ballots printed.
If you have one of these notes at home, in good condition, it may be time to look for a collector's house and negotiate the sale. After all, R$4,500 can go down well.
