This Friday (15th) is the deadline for public and private schools across the country to enroll their students in the 48th International Letter Writing Contest. The contest is promoted worldwide by the Universal Postal Union (UPU). In Brazil, it is being carried out by the Post Office.
The theme of this edition of the contest is “Write a Letter about Your Hero”. Students up to 15 years old can participate.

Each school must carry out an internal process and select, among the students' essays, two that will represent it in the contest. Essays must be in letter format. They must also be written by hand, using black or blue ballpoint pen. In addition, they must contain a maximum of 900 words.
The essays must be posted by Correios, as registered letter or Sedex. All must have acknowledgment of receipt. Day 15 is the deadline for posting. Addresses are available on the Post Office page.
The contest has four stages: school, state, national and international. The latter is the responsibility of the UPU.
The first three placed in the state phase and the respective schools receive cash prizes. The amount ranges from R$700 to R$2,500. The winner of the national phase receives a trophy and R$ 5,000. In addition, it will represent Brazil in the international stage. The winning school in this stage will receive R$ 10,000.
Last year, student Clarice Rilyane Oliveira da Silva, from São Gonçalo do Amarante, in Rio Grande do Norte, won the national stage. Rilyane received an honorable mention from the UPU for her letter. The theme of the last issue was “Imagine You are a Time Traveling Card. What Message Do You Want to Leave for Your Readers?”.
