In the long we saw the kind Dr. Bruce Banner portrayed by Edward Norton. He then became a founding member of the titular superhero team in 2012's The Avengers, with Banner and Hulk recast with Mark Ruffalo, who has played the role ever since.
While Ruffalo's portrayal of the character was warmly received by fans, he still didn't get the Hulk solo movie, which is apparently commonplace for most of his companions Avengers.
The actor went on record that while there have been talks of a standalone film, the main barrier has been a legal battle between Marvel Studios and Universal Pictures. Universal, which produced the 2008 film in co-production with Marvel, owns the production rights to the solo Hulk films. Marvel owns the rights to distribute and use the character in other franchises. It seems, however, that this may be about to change.
According to sources inside The GWW, a new solo Hulk movie tentatively titled Hulk against the World is in active development at Marvel Studios and is expected to begin production in late 2022. The novelty would take advantage of the Disney+ series She-Hulk, starring Tatiana Maslany, which is due to be released in 2022 and will feature Bruce de Ruffalo in a supporting role. The site also reports that the reason for this development is the Hulk movie rights reverting from Universal to Marvel/Disney.
The prospect of adapting the Hulk against the World will be of interest to many comic book fans. The story is a sequel to Greg Pak's Planet Hulk graphic novel, which saw the character sent far from Earth by a group of Marvel heroes known as 'The Illuminati' and dominating the planet Sakaar through participating in style combats gladiator.
Some of this might sound familiar to MCU fans, as several story elements were incorporated into Taika Watiti's Thor: Ragnarok. Hulk Versus the World, also written by Pak, follows the Hulk returning to Earth to exact revenge on the Illuminati (comprised of heroes like Iron Man and Dr. Strange) after the ship they used to exile him explodes, destroying the new life he had made for himself same.
While the MCU adaptation needs to make some big changes, this news will be welcome for any fan. who loved this interaction of the Hulk but felt the character is being underrated as a player supporting. While no cast members are confirmed for this project, it seems likely that Ruffalo will return to the lead role, considering her commitment to the role through multiple films, guest appearances, and her upcoming role in the Disney+ series She-Hulk.
Indeed, She-Hulk appears to be a timely project to expand the Hulk's supporting cast. Perhaps a potential Hulk vs. World is just the first of several long-overdue Hulk solo ventures.
