First photograph taken in Brazil was taken IN THIS city

The first phonographic record in the world is from the year 1826, by Joseph Nicéphore, in France. Because it was a time when innovations were slow to arrive in other parts of the planet, the first photo taken in Brazil took place only in 1840, by Louis Comte. The Frenchman captured images of one of the largest cities in the country.

First photo recorded in Brazil captures images of a historic place

The history of photography is marked by evolutions in the art of capturing images. In the year 1839, images of people and environments were usually captured by a device called a daguerreotype, in honor of the creator of the instrument Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre.

And it was with this device that, in 1840, the Frenchman Louis Comte recorded a historic image of the city of Rio de Janeiro, in Praça XV, more precisely in the garden of the Imperial Palace.

The photograph shows Mestre Valentim's fountain, in the square that today is considered one of the most famous places in Rio de Janeiro for containing several constructions that dating back to the country's past, such as the Imperial Palace, residence of Emperors Dom Pedro I and Dom Pedro II, Tiradentes Palace and other sculptures and monuments historical.

The development of photography in recent centuries is marked by a technological revolution and the popularization of cameras.

The daguerreotype is considered the first camera device in the world and is one of those responsible for the popular dissemination of photography. In Brazil, the daguerreotype used by Louis Comte was given as a gift to Dom Pedro II as a form of homage to the emperor. On the occasion, the city records made by the camera were also given to Dom Pedro II.

At that time, photography became part of the lives of just a few people because it was expensive and not very accessible. In this way, only a few families could register weddings, baptisms and other events.

However, as in other areas of life, photography has also been revolutionized and is now part of everyone's daily life. After all, most electronic devices today contain state-of-the-art cameras, with much higher precision than the old devices.

The city of Rio de Janeiro, recorded by Louis Comte with great detail and good precision for the instrument available at the time, is today one of the most photographed places in Brazil. There are several angles and creative records of the city.
