The beginning of the creation of dynamite occurred in 1846 with the chemist Italian Ascanio Sobrero. In his laboratory, he associated glycerol, nitric acid and sulfuric acid, resulting in nitroglycerin. However, nitroglycerin was extremely unstable and exploded easily.
Alfred Nobelhe was the one who created a more stable explosive from a mixture of nitroglycerin and diatomaceous earth. He was the first large-scale manufacturer of the material, however, due to the problems already mentioned, his factory exploded, causing the death of his brother, Emil Nobel, and four other men in 1864.
For this reason, Alfred devoted himself to discovering the safe manipulation of nitroglycerin. So, in 1867, he had the idea of mixing the material with another absorbent: silica.
Thus, to explode the dynamite, it was necessary to include a detonator, also invented by Alfred Nobel. The detonator is made with a fuse, a wooden dowel and gunpowder. Thus, only with the shock wave released by the detonation that the dynamite is triggered.
In 1867, Nobel received the patent for dynamite, but continued to carry out research. As early as 1876, the scientist patented gelignite, a gel consisting of nitroglycerin, cellulose and other gelatinous substances.
Gelignite, in turn, in addition to being more stable than the original dynamite with silica, also proved to be more potent, in addition to not dissolving in water.
