typically Brazilian fruits

Although official records establish that more than 300 fruits are originally Brazilian, few are known. This is because few are produced commercially.

It is estimated that among the twenty most consumed varieties in Brazil, only three are native here:

  • passion fruit;
  • pineapple;
  • guava.

Despite the country's extensive flora, most Brazilian fruits are little commercially exploited, restricted to their regions of origin, such as the Amazon, cerrado and caatinga.

Among the most consumed by us, and which stand out in large-scale production, we can highlight the native

  • cashew;
  • guarana;
  • pineapple;
  • cocoa;
  • coconut from Bahia;
  • passion fruit;
  • guava;
  • jabuticaba.

Despite this, regional flavors are being more valued every day, not only in fresh production, but also as a source of income and appreciation of Brazilian regional culture.

In the cerrado, for example, native fruits have gained a lot of space in recent decades. Mainly with regard to the local production of sweets, jellies, ice cream, popsicles and other artisanal products.

This is the case of pequi, bacupari-do-cerrado, murici, baru, buriti, araticum and mangaba and many others, all very Brazilian.

However, some of these fruits, even before being catalogued, are already doomed to disappear. The main reasons are the devastation of the Atlantic Forest and the Amazon Forest, in addition to the expansion unbridled expansion of agricultural frontiers, mainly in the cerrado territory, but also frequent in other States.

foreign fruits

Who sees all the tropicality of Carmen Miranda with her exuberant banana hats, a symbol of an entire era of our country, he has no idea that one of the main fruits that adorned his head is not part of the flora Brazilian.

There are no precise records regarding the nationality of the banana. But it is believed to have been cultivated for over 4,000 years. The most likely origin of the fruit is in the East, more precisely in southern China or Indochina.

But it's not just her. Other fruits extremely consumed in Brazil did not come from here. The orange, for example, came from India, the papaya came from Mexico, while the strawberry originates from the United States and Chile.

Like these, we can list an infinity of flavors that we like, but that were imported from other countries. Among other examples, in addition to the previous ones, we can mention apple, lemon, mango, grape, watermelon, persimmon, coconut, avocado and many others.

The fruits above have such ancient origins that over time it has become much more difficult to locate their origin.
