What does an agronomist do?

  • Management of production areas;
  • Monitoring the cultivation and harvesting of crops;
  • Installation of irrigation systems and soil quality;
  • Conducting research and developing projects to improve production;
  •  Expertise in production strategies and prices of products of animal and plant origin;
  • Recovery of devastated areas and management with reforestation;
  •  Soil preservation and pest and disease control;
  • Planning and control of pasture production and animal husbandry.

How much does an agronomist earn?

According to the Catho website, the national average salary for agronomist engineers is BRL 4,878 and for the position of agricultural manager the average salary is BRL 6,781.

The consultancy Robert Half, on the other hand, formulated a table that presents the average salaries for engineers (including agronomists) with more than 10 years of experience working in large industries:

  • Supply Chain Director: BRL 21,000 to BRL 50,000
  • Engineering Director: BRL 20,500 to BRL 47,000
  • Director of Operations: BRL 18,500 to BRL 42,000
  • Purchasing Manager: BRL 9,500 to BRL 32,000
  • Application Engineer: BRL 6,700 to BRL 18,000
  • Research and Development Engineer: BRL 6,700 to BRL 13,300

Public competition for agronomist engineer

In the case of work in the public sector, the salaries of agronomists vary according to the position, location and workload.

An example is the contest held by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, which offered a salary of BRL 12,539 for a Federal Agricultural Inspector with a weekly shift of 40 hours.
