Most Brazilian students enjoy studying Portuguese and mathematics. When they leave school, 57.8% say they like to study mathematics. 76.1%, that is, three out of four students, like to study Portuguese.
The data are from a questionnaire applied to students who participated in the Basic Education Assessment System (Saeb). When it comes to doing homework, the percentages drop. 56.7% say they always do their Portuguese homework.

Another 25.4% do their Portuguese homework from time to time and 13.4% never or almost never do it. Mathematics tasks are always done by 52.6% of students. Another 26.7% do it from time to time and 16.6% never do it.
Both Portuguese language and mathematics are key subjects. They are charged both in national and international assessments.
Despite saying that they like to study, Brazilian students do not have such good results in the tests. The latest Saeb showed that around 70% of students who completed high school in the country had insufficient results in mathematics. The same percentage did not learn even the basics of Portuguese.
Saeb data show that poor performance is not just due to a lack of interest in studying. Most teachers in the final year of high school are unable to complete the content scheduled for the year. 59.6% accomplished less than 80% of what was planned in 2017.
Insufficient financial resources and indiscipline contribute. In addition, more than 60% of directors stated that there was a lack of textbooks for students in 2017. One in five directors also said that the books did not arrive in time for the start of classes.
