On February 25th, it was confirmed in Brazil the first case with a positive test for the new coronavirus.
The case is of a 61-year-old man, resident of São Paulo, who traveled to Italy, in the Lombardy region, between the 9th and 21st of February for work.
A infection was confirmed by Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, at the Morumbi unit (South Zone), on February 24, through the real-time PCR test.
After preliminary results from the health facility and in accordance with the National Contingency Plan, the hospital forwarded the sample to the national reference laboratory, Instituto Adolfo Lutz, for the execution of a rebuttal.
“The emergency care team strictly followed all the protocols established by the Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC-USA), to provide the appropriate care and ensure the safety of the patient and all the professionals involved”, highlighted in a note the hospital.
Despite the patient apparently being well and showing only moderate signs of the disease, according to the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, he is “in respiratory isolation, which will be maintained for the next 14 days".
“The medical team continues to actively monitor him, as well as the people who had close contact with him”, adds the note.
Just under a week, on February 29, the Ministry of Health confirmed the second case of coronavirus in Brazil.
The 32-year-old man, who also returned from a trip to Italy, is from São Paulo and was diagnosed at Albert Einstein Hospital. Even with the similar situation, the Ministry of Health reports that the cases are not linked to each other.
Coming from a flight from Milan, in the Lombardy region (north of the country), the patient wore the mask throughout the trip, since when the symptoms began.
Arriving in São Paulo on February 27, he went in search of care, where he reported his symptoms: fever, cough, sore throat, muscle pain and headache. Soon, he was guided to home isolation, since the clinical picture is not serious and is stable.
All preventive measures were adopted by the hospital. The man and his wife, the only household contact and who remain without symptoms, are in isolation and will be under daily monitoring.
As in the previous case, the state and municipal departments, together with Anvisa (National Sanitary Surveillance), will investigate close contacts along the flight path and other places that may have circulated.
According to guidelines given by the World Health Organization (WHO), the test carried out by Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, with the specific exam for SARS-CoV2 (RT-PCR, by the Charité protocol), was considered as final for the Ministry of Health.
In this way, a check is not necessary. The final result of the test will be sent to the Instituto Adolfo Lutz, for genetic monitoring of the virus.
Even if there is confirmation of the positive result, government representatives reinforce that the strategies already created to contain the spread of the disease, given that Brazil has already anticipated the enactment of public health emergency. On occasion, it can even carry out contracts without bidding.
With regard to the people who were in contact with the patient, whether at home, in the hospital or on the flight, the Health Departments of the State and City Hall, with the support of the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) and the airline, make the identification.
