The project indicates an important social development for 66 municipalities in the region of Araguaína and Bico do Papagaio, where 1.7 million inhabitants live.
The plan is to transfer courses, students and positions from the UFT campuses in Araguaína and Tocantinópolis to the UFNT in the new campuses in Xambioá and Guaraí. Currently, UFT has more than 20,000 students and about 50 on-site undergraduate courses, including undergraduate, bachelor's and technological courses.
The idea of dismemberment is old. Three years ago, former president Dilma Rouseff proposed this fragmentation. In that circumstance, the Executive Power had proposed the creation of five new federal universities resulting from the fragmentation of existing institutions. Goiás, Mato Grosso, Piauí gained new universities, while that of Tocantis remained unresolved.
After analysis by the Senate Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ), the proposal's rapporteur, Senator Eduardo Gomes, brought encouraging perspectives. According to him, the dismemberment of the UFT entails several improvements for the surroundings, due to the expansion of the offer of higher education and the generation of scientific knowledge in a way that involves research, extension and an extremely relevant community and social insertion for the counties.
