These machines are even asking for a fixed amount of 20% of the total purchase price, even when they have minimal or no interaction with employees, according to a recent report by the wall street newspaper.
According to the WSJ, customers are expressing feelings of obligation when faced with the option tipping at self-service machines and wondering who exactly that extra cash is for going.
William Michael Lynn, professor of consumer behavior and tipping culture at
Nolan School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University, highlighted that companies are seizing the opportunity to get extra money at a low cost. He points out that it is understandable that companies look for ways to increase their revenue.However, in early 2023, consumers were already showing frustration, as some companies not only requested tips, but also asked for an even higher amount, reaching 30% of the total purchase, as reported for the Associated Press.

Shaun MacDonald, an industry expert, told the Fox Business shared his opinion on automatic tip requests in quick service establishments. He mentioned the importance of having clear information about where these tips are directed, as it is an amount directed to the machine.
MacDonald pointed out that while something fancy isn't necessary, it would be useful to have an indication of that tips help employees, including management, or are shared with all collaborators.
