Student Rafael Moreno Ribeiro, aged 17, won two bronze medals after participating in the International Chemistry and Physics Olympics. Because of this, he became the first Brazilian to be awarded in both competitions simultaneously.

The last time a Brazilian participated in both Olympics at the same time was in 2002. On that occasion, Rafael Tajra Fonteles left with the bronze medal at the Chemistry Olympiad and an honorable mention in the Physics dispute.
In order to achieve this rather unusual feat, Rafael Ribeiro had to change state and school, in addition to to also go through the state and national qualifiers in a process that lasted more than two years. The international evaluations took place on July 13th.
Rafael ended up winning the bronze medal at the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO), becoming the third best-placed Brazilian in the competition. He also took another bronze at the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO), where he became the best placed among all Brazilian representatives.
The marathon to prepare for these competitions started some time ago, when Rafael was still in elementary school. He said that he had a lot of difficulty with mathematics and that he needed to dedicate himself to the discipline, while was preparing to participate in the selection process for a military school in Salvador, where he lived with his family in era.
“To get into a military school, you had to study a lot of math and also have a good foundation. I took the test during the fifth year to be able to enter the sixth”, said the student. The following year, Rafael was already enrolled in high school.
