A teacher punished a student who she had asked to return to her classroom before her classmates because she didn't like the movie chosen by the school. Upon returning home, the student told her mother that she was induced to stay “out of reach” of the other students.
Confused, the mother made a post to a community on Reddit seeking advice on how to act in this situation.

A mother came to the social network reddit, in the r/Parenting community, asked for advice about a situation with her daughter at school that left her feeling apprehensive and confused.
“They had a reading competition at her school… She read enough to choose between 5 presents. One of the gifts was a movie day at school.”
“Today she came home and was upset and apprehensive to tell me that she got herself into trouble,” the mother shared via the post.
“Today was her movie day and she didn't like the movie”, says the mother, explaining that her daughter asked the teacher in charge of the class to return to the room. According to the daughter, the teacher sympathetically replied “Yes, of course, dear”, but, upon returning to the room, she said that she was rude and punished her.
The punishment was to leave her “out of reach” of the other children, asking them not to interact with the girl, ignoring her for the rest of the day.
“My daughter is super polite and never gets into trouble. Any school staff or adults around her always say nice things about her. I'm just confused.”
Consequences of the “silent treatment”
Psychologist Ricardo Milito, in an article on the UOL website, condemns punishment as the behavior of an abuser who, frustrated, tries to belittle the victim of abuse.
“The aggressor, when frustrated, refuses to talk and decides not to talk as a way of punishing and belittling the other”, explains the psychologist.
Opinion of the mother and users of the network
The mother opines saying, "I don't see why she should be forced to watch a film that is a PRIZE, was presented as optional, and was not educational."
Some users comment, also expressing her view of the situation and say that the mother has every right to feel frustrated for her daughter.
“I teach in the same grade. Please talk to the teacher first. Ask what the punishment means. Even the best students can misunderstand.” This user comments and reinforces that he does not think that his daughter is wrong, however, it is always necessary in these situations to be sure of the details with a responsible adult.
