News to warm your heart this week! Amid the sad routine of therapies, oxygen and hospital environment, children and young people admitted to public hospitals in Paraná have the opportunity to continue studying, even during treatment. All thanks to the initiative of the Hospital Schooling Network Service (Sareh).
The work consists of regular visits by a pedagogue and three teachers to students hospitalized in the hospitals served by the program. However, these professionals go deeper and, in addition to hospital care, extend assistance to those who follow the treatment at home.

In an article published in Gazeta do Povo, pedagogue Leila Cristina Cirino describes how she reaches out to children. First, she visits the rooms in search of those interested in continuing her studies. Then, from the positive reception on the part of the sick, she gets in contact with the respective schools.
In this, it informs about the patient's state of health, information is sought about the content studied by him, if there are open tests and, thus, structures how classes should be taught in the hospital. The teachers visit the student in the afternoon, already carrying the individualized plan, considering what was forwarded at school.
Each teacher is responsible for an area of knowledge – Language (Foreign and Portuguese Languages, Art, Physical Education); Human Sciences (Sociology, History, Geography, Religious Education, Philosophy) and Exact Sciences (Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Science and Mathematics).
The project selects qualified professionals who also have knowledge in hospital education. The work is voluntary and, in its execution, teachers need to teach the extensive content of secondary and fundamental education, in addition to preparing reports on each class and the student's progress.
The initiative is supported by state legislation. In Paraná, it is the right of the child to continue to be cared for at home if he/she still cannot return to school. Teachers and families choose suitable times for classes while all progress must be recorded by reports sent to the Regional Education Centers.
In total, there are 18 centers served by the program. See the list of participating hospitals:
Sareh's main objective is to continue with the schooling process, facing the lack of motivation due to the illness and distance from social life. Thus, the student does not lose interest in learning or the school year. But if providing children with education is already rewarding, imagine taking that to parents too!
With the project, parents of hospitalized children are also encouraged to go back to school. The program assists these people in entering the Youth and Adult Education (EJA) modality, giving instructions to those who show interest. Leila points out that this is a frequent situation at the Hospital das Clínicas in Curitiba, a unit served by Sareh.
Also in the Gazeta publication, Professor Angélica Macedo Lima reports having developed a doctoral thesis on the program. She reinforces two important points of Sareh: the reward of the professionals involved and, mainly, the influence of education on the evolution of the clinical condition of the patients.
According to Angélica, “it is difficult for a hospitalized student not to want to study, even in the ICU [...] the desire is to move on”. One of the examples cited in the article was that of a student from Minas Gerais who underwent treatment at the HC in Curitiba. The girl's mother claims that the project helped a lot in her daughter's recovery by providing joy and encouragement through classes.
Another fundamental point of the program is the influence on the child's return to school. Participating teams advise on the adaptation process, taking into account the student's reality and the different needs due to the clinical condition. A process whose penalty can be alleviated by understanding and understanding.
