Cartoons are the most frequent type of programming in children's daily lives, especially those aged up to six years. Through them, it is possible to absorb educational content of paramount importance in the formation and development of children. But, have you ever stopped to think about how deaf children manage to understand a cartoon that is shown on television?
In a country where almost ten million people are deaf, the cultural industry is deficient for children who are hearing impaired. A reality that could change thanks to the initiative of Brazilian director Paulo Henrique dos Santos. With seven years of experience in animation, he is the creator of “Min e as Mãozinhas”, the first cartoon entirely in the Brazilian Sign Language (LIBRAS).

The idea was born out of a real need when Paulo needed to communicate with a hearing impaired person and he couldn't. The cartoon is aimed at children from three to six years old and features different characters, each speaking their own language. The elephant, with his elephantese, cannot understand the cat, who, of course, speaks cattese! But, that's where Min, who gives the name to the drawing, comes in to teach LIBRAS to all of them.
Thus, the girl will be able to bring her friends closer through inclusion. The pilot episode was made available by YouTube on September 26, Deaf Day, and already has more than 114,000 views. However, other shorter videos had already been inserted a long time ago, always on the same theme. The objective is that, in each chapter, five LIBRAS signs are taught.
Paulo intends to produce and release 13 more episodes for the first season. All it takes is for the project to get sponsors, support it still doesn't have. If you want to know more about the drawing, you can follow the publications made on official page of “Min e as Mãoszinhas” hosted by Facebook. And, of course, access the animation channel to check out – and spread – the news!
