A project that goesbeyond the tunnel” that separates the North and South zones of Rio de Janeiro. It is this analogy that summarizes the idea of creating Epicenter, an initiative that plans to boost the creative industries in the suburbs of the city. With that, new jobs will be generated, in addition to income and opportunities for residents of the region.

Youth and Adult Education (EJA) is once again a federal priority
The project also has the support of the Special Secretariat for Carioca Youth, and was divided into four actions: Espaço Maker, a club with art, culture and entertainment programming; Conference, meeting focused on businesses with socioeconomic impact; a festival that aims to promote independent music by attracting, promoting and making connections in this specific market; and finally, the Food Accelerator, whose function is to boost food companies in Madureira and neighboring districts.
“Epicentro is an amplifier of the suburbs of Rio, since we don't have a space to develop. The central idea is to generate development opportunities ‘where ideas are born (in the periphery) and not where they happen’ (in upscale neighborhoods). We have many talented workers, but who, due to the social and economic situation, are unable to place their own business on a market scale. Our goal is for participants to leave applying what they learned here”, says Marcello Dughettu, head and director of Duto, a business development media agency.
For 6 months, ten selected entrepreneurs will have access to activities to produce and develop their own projects. At each stage, they must deliver business plans for an individual assessment of the evolution of each one of them. In the end, the best evaluated will receive a contribution of R$ 10 thousand to invest in their own business. The start of the project is scheduled for October 8th.
“We have many businesses that are not formalized yet. In addition, most choose to start a business in the food business, as they take into account the fact that everyone needs to eat and therefore it will be easier to sell. However, in reality, many projects last between three and six months and those that survive are not formalized”, explains businesswoman, food engineer and CEO of the accelerator, Lorena Coimbra.
The first physical action at the Epicenter will take place on October 20, in an event called “Marco Zero”. This event will feature the launch of the project and presentation of the activation calendar, in addition to kicking off the program of activities in the space and open the countdown to the 410th anniversary of Madureira, which takes place on the 24th of May 2023.
