According to some witnesses, the 3-year-old girl, named Eva Rydings, was found dead after sleeping at her grandmother's house. She appeared to be healthy before the incident, presenting only a runny nose as something different than usual.
Eva was found dead by her 5-year-old brother, surrounded by vomit. He tried to wake her up, but as he couldn't, he quickly went to tell his grandmother that her sister appeared to be dead. The girl was lying slightly inclined, with her head above her body, to avoid possible choking and reflux during her sleep.
An ambulance was called and when the doctors arrived, they realized the seriousness of the situation and took Eva to the hospital immediately. Stuart Humphries of the Ambulance Service stated that he found the girl lying face up with her mouth full of vomit and blood.
Although she was taken as quickly as possible by paramedics to the hospital, Eva had already passed away by the time she got there. Coroner Joanne Kearsley examined the case and stated that the mattress the girl was sleeping on was too soft, which may have contributed to her death. However, the cause of death has yet to be identified.
Pediatrician Gemma Petts performed an autopsy on Eva's body and found the presence of several viruses in her blood, but nothing significant enough to have caused the girl's death.
“A streptococcal infection cannot be completely ruled out, as Eva had pneumonia. However, for the infection to have contributed to the death, I would have had to see more severe evidence of inflammation."
Eva was adopted by her family in the first few weeks of her life and, according to her family, she was an incredible child. Her father, Shaun Casey, says: “It hasn't been easy. We had numerous trips booked with her. Last year Christmas was very difficult. She loved life.” Sadly, Eva's early death left the family devastated.
