'Terrible and irreverent' is how fans are calling the 'new' Mona Lisa

An expansion made to one of the most famous paintings in the world, the Mona Lisa, caused discontent among art lovers. Painted by Leonardo da Vinci in 1503, the iconic work is on display at the Louvre Museum in Paris, and is admired daily by hundreds of visitors.

The Mona Lisa is a half-length portrait, measuring 77 x 53 cm. However, the use of artificial intelligence resulted in an enlargement of the work, with the “predicted” filling of its background, generating revolt among art fans.

Kody Young, the “AI interpreter”, is responsible for generating such controversy, using technology to fill the backgrounds of some of the most valuable works of art in the world.

In a Twitter post, he raised the question: "Have you ever wondered what the rest of the Mona Lisa would look like?"

The consequences of this controversy

Kody Young used the Adobe Firefly tool to explore the backgrounds of several famous paintings and expand on them.

In the expanded image of the Mona Lisa shared by him, it is possible to observe mountains, clouds and irregular rock formations.

While the image was a test run to demonstrate the potential of artificial intelligence, many were dissatisfied with the AI-inspired expansion of the artwork. Many critics have said that this goes beyond the artist's original intent and interferes with the work as a whole.

On social networks, where this reinterpretation of the Mona Lisa is circulating, several art fans protest against Kody Young's “work”.

In general, these reviewers have expressed their frustration, arguing that expanding the work through AI is highly inappropriate and disrespectful.

With a strong critical tone, most comments emphasized the importance of not appropriating and “vandalizing” artists' work in this way. In an isolated comment, one man went so far as to say that the expansion was "terrible and irreverent".

For these people, works like the Mona Lisa are the result of a perception that, perhaps, artificial intelligence will not be able to achieve.
