Brazil has recovered well from the case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, known as mad cow disease, which was recorded in February in the state of Pará.
Although Russia has suspended the import of beef from animals over 30 months old from Pará, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has since then worked to avoid undue market closures, through its network of embassies and attachés agricultural.

The Ministry informed this Friday (7th) that Russia ended the embargo on Brazilian beef, which adds to the recent reopening of the market in the Philippines and other markets, representing the full normalization of trade in the product with the Russia.
According to a statement from the folder, the atypical form of the disease does not pose a risk to public health and does not justify import restrictions, according to guidelines from the World Organization for Animal Health (WHOA).
Beef exports to Russia in 2022 totaled around US$ 165 million, equivalent to 24 thousand tons of the product, while the Philippines was the sixth destination for beef exports from Brazil, reaching US$ 275 million in 2022 (61 thousand tons).
“Mad cow disease” is the popular name for Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), a neurodegenerative disease that affects the nervous system of cattle. BSE is caused by an abnormal protein called a prion, which can be found in the nerve and spinal tissues of infected animals.
The disease can be transmitted to humans who consume contaminated meat, which can lead to a variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (vCJD), a fatal neurodegenerative disease in humans.
On February 22, 2023, the Agricultural Defense Agency of the State of Pará (Adepará) released the test result for a suspected case of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, also known as Crazy Cow".
The animal, aged between seven and eight years, was identified on a property in Vila Cruzeiro do Sul, municipality of Itupiranga, southeast of the state. The Agency has already isolated the 160 head of cattle from the site, while the animal with the disease has been slaughtered.
The property was inspected and preventively interdicted. It is important to point out that the symptoms indicate that it is an atypical form of the disease, which arises spontaneously in nature, causing no risk of dissemination to the herd or humans.
